Prioritizing nationally endemic species for conservation

چکیده
Over 90% of recent human-caused extinctions are wild species known from only one nation. These nationally endemic represent the greatest global conservation responsibilities for any country. To meet this responsibility, we must first identify species. We developed comprehensive inventory 308 plant, animal, and fungi infraspecies found in Canada, which approximately concern. Our analysis also identified 27 spatial concentrations species, many associated with glacial refugia, islands, coasts, unique habitats. Nationally have not been primary focus endangered Canada other countries. provides a case study on how national inventories can be applied to support assessments place-based conservation. Prioritizing build sentiments sense place responsibility foster public interest. propose framework that highlights critical role endemism preventing extinctions. Greater will international biodiversity targets, including post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Prioritizing conservation investments for mammal species globally
We need to set priorities for conservation because we cannot do everything, everywhere, at the same time. We determined priority areas for investment in threat abatement actions, in both a cost-effective and spatially and temporally explicit way, for the threatened mammals of the world. Our analysis presents the first fine-resolution prioritization analysis for mammals at a global scale that ac...
متن کاملPrioritizing species conservation: does the Cape Verde kite exist?
The Cape Verde kite (Milvus milvus fasciicauda) is considered to be one of the rarest birds of prey in the world and at significant risk of extinction. For this reason there is great interest in both the taxonomic and the population status of this group. To help resolve its taxonomic status, we provide phylogenetic analyses based on three mitochondrial genes for a sampling of kites in the genus...
متن کاملSpecies distribution modelling for conservation of an endangered endemic orchid
Concerns regarding the long-term viability of threatened and endangered plant species are increasingly warranted given the potential impacts of climate change and habitat fragmentation on unstable and isolated populations. Orchidaceae is the largest and most diverse family of flowering plants, but it is currently facing unprecedented risks of extinction. Despite substantial conservation emphasi...
متن کاملPrioritizing Populations for Conservation Using Phylogenetic Networks
In the face of inevitable future losses to biodiversity, ranking species by conservation priority seems more than prudent. Setting conservation priorities within species (i.e., at the population level) may be critical as species ranges become fragmented and connectivity declines. However, existing approaches to prioritization (e.g., scoring organisms by their expected genetic contribution) are ...
متن کاملPrioritizing multiple-use landscapes for conservation: methods for large multi-species planning problems.
Across large parts of the world, wildlife has to coexist with human activity in highly modified and fragmented landscapes. Combining concepts from population viability analysis and spatial reserve design, this study develops efficient quantitative methods for identifying conservation core areas at large, even national or continental scales. The proposed methods emphasize long-term population pe...
